Cast Iron Skillets vs. Non-Stick Skillets: Which One is Right for Your Recipe?

Tina Eats Food here, with a huge staple product in every kitchen. Skillets! How many skillets have you tried? Do you put thought into which pan you prefer? Do you wonder why food sometimes sticks to the pan and gets absolutely ruined? This article is to clear up some confusion on the different uses for cast iron skillets vs non-stick skillets and when we should decide to upgrade our skillet selection.

Cast iron skillets and non-stick skillets are two of the most popular types of skillets on the market. Both have their own unique advantages and disadvantages, so it can be difficult to decide which one is right for specific situations.

Let's start with pros and cons.

Cast Iron Skillets

  • Pros:

    • Very durable and can last for generations if properly cared for.

    • Can be used at high heat, making them ideal for searing and frying.

    • Seasoned cast iron is naturally non-stick, so food won't stick to the pan.

    • Can be used on the stovetop, in the oven, and even on the grill.

  • Cons:

    • Can be heavy and difficult to handle.

    • Can be difficult to clean, especially if not seasoned properly.

    • Can be reactive with acidic foods, such as tomatoes.

It is a delicate balance to keep your cast iron skillet properly seasoned. And cleaning the cast iron can be a learning curve as well. But it is essential to have when you are cooking a variety of foods, especially meat!

Next, Let's look closer at non-stick skillets.

Non-Stick Skillets

  • Pros:

    • Very easy to clean, even if food sticks to the pan.

    • Non-stick coating prevents food from sticking, making it a good choice for things like eggs.

    • Lighter than cast iron skillets, making them easier to handle.

  • Cons:

    • Non-stick coating can wear off over time, making the pan less non-stick.

    • Cannot be used at high heat, as the non-stick coating can break down.

    • Not as durable as cast iron skillets, and may need to be replaced more often.

    • Cannot be used with metal utensils as they can get scratched and damaged.

So, Which One Is Right for You?

When comparing cast iron skillets vs non-stick skillets, the best type of skillet for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. If you're looking for a durable, versatile pan that can withstand high heat, then a cast iron skillet is a good choice. If you're looking for a pan that's easy to clean and doesn't stick, then a non-stick skillet is a good option.

For me, I need both! I recommend everyone have both cast iron skillets and non-stick skillets available. There are times when I need to sear meat at high heat and scrape all the crunchy bits off the bottom of the pan with a big metal spatula. Then there are times when I need to cook an egg perfectly in a slippery non-stick pan!

Here are some additional scenarios to consider when choosing whether to use your cast iron skillet or your non-stick skillet.

  • What you're cooking: If you need to sear meat or cook at high heat and/or bake it for a long amount of time, then a cast iron skillet is a better choice. If you're about to cook delicate foods or foods that are prone to sticking, then a non-stick skillet is a better, easier option (remember there are non-stick pots as well for things like mashed potatoes). Although cast irons are very versatile, they can be tricky to season and maintain to get the non-stick effect.

  • Your budget: Cast iron skillets are typically more expensive than non-stick skillets. However, cast iron skillets can last for generations, so they're a good investment if you're willing to spend the money. • Your lifestyle: If you're busy and don't have a lot of time to cook, then a non-stick skillet is a better option. Non-stick skillets are easier to clean (with soft, non-scratch cleaning supplies). They're a quick and easy way to cook anything. It just takes a different type of maintenance than the cast iron to keep it around a long time.

No matter which type of skillet you choose, it will be useful for something. Make sure to season the cast iron properly before using it. This will help to protect the pan and make it more non-stick. I'm not the best at the cast-iron seasoning process, but I will be writing about it soon after much research!

I hope this article helps you decide which type of skillet you need!

Next post I will review the non-stick skillets I purchased. I went with Rachel Ray cooking set and I really do LOVE it. Although, that Blue Diamond brand on amazon is looking really amazing.
